Facebook whistleblower leaked the secret that Iran and China involved in spying their enemies

Iran and China has rapidly improved its cyber capabilities. They are not in the top rank of cyber powers, but are ahead of most nations in strategy and organization for cyber warfare.

In July, facebook take down 2000 accounts run by a group of hackers in Iran as part of a cyber-spying operation that targeted mostly US military personnel and people working at defense and aerospace companies. Facebook is banned both from China and Iran.

Hague states a series of links between activity on Facebook and deadly violence in Myanmar and Ethiopia, and spying by China and Iran.

Iran, which does not have diplomatic relations with the United States, is aligned against US allies in the region, including Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other smaller countries. Washington has imposed diplomatic and economic sanctions against Iran.

In an interview with CBS she revealed that before departing from company she copied a series of internal memos and documents. Revelations included documents that showed that celebrities, politicians and high profile Facebook users were treated differently by the company.

Haugen’s team also observed “the active participation of, China and Iran government doing espionage on other state actors.

Haugen, whose last role at Facebook was as a product manager supporting the company’s counter espionage team, was asked by one senator whether Facebook is used by “authoritarian or terrorist-based leaders” around the world. She said such use of the platforms is “definitely” happening, and that Facebook is “very aware” of it.

She further added her team directly worked on tracking Chinese participation on the platform, surveilling Uyghur populations in places around the world. We could actually find the Chinese based on them doing these kinds of things,” Haugen also observed “the active participation of, China and Iran government doing espionage on other state actors.

Online information and disinformation has been playing a pivotal role in shaping public opinion throughout the Middle East and North Africa for over a decade. Facebook is a platform of running disinformation campaign which is used by many countries against their adversaries.

For instance, In 2019, Facebook removed 163 Facebook accounts, 51 pages, 33 groups, and four Instagram accounts for coordinated inauthentic behavior originating from Egypt against North African countries.
